In 1988 a group of committed Christian families decided that a
Christian School was needed to educate their children in the Bow Island
area. Through hard work and dedication, several portable
buildings were obtained and connected together. The school opened
its doors in September 1989 with Mr. Harold Carlaw as the
principal/teacher along with his wife Mrs. Faye Carlaw and Mrs. Elaine
Rowan taking on the remainder of the teaching responsibilities.
Over the next several years parents and the Board began discussions on constructing a new building. An architect was hired and with much fundraising, construction began in 1999. The Board wisely decided to complete the building in phases as finances dictated rather than have a large debt load. Students moved into the building on May 2003 fulfilling a promise that the existing grade 9 students would be in the new building before they graduated. This new building would have 3 new classrooms, a Home-Ec area and a huge gymnasium, the largest in the county. The remaining portables would be used to house our ECS - Grade 2 students with other rooms used for an improved library, computer, staff and workrooms.
Throughout the years that CCCA has been in existence, there have been three principals who have led the school. As noted, Mr. Harold Carlaw was our first leader, running the school from 1989-1991. Mrs. Elaine Rowan who had been teaching here for 2 years then accepted the position and remained the school's principal for 10 years. Finally in 2001 Mr. Kim Dolan became the principal and has remained here since.
Cherry Coulee has always performed well in the area of athletics especially in basketball. This small southeastern Alberta school has won many tournaments and in 2003 its basketball team won the county championships defeating many larger schools in the area. Time and time again people have commented on the politeness and fair playing of our students, which is a testament to Godly parents and a positive Christian school environment. The school has also preformed well in the area of academics, scoring well in both Canadian Achievement Tests (CATS) and Provincial Achievement Tests (PATS) for many years.
There have been many changes at CCCA over its many years of existence. Students have come and gone as well as some teachers and Board members. Our school has had to compete with many other schools in this rural farming community. One thing that has not changed however, is our commitment to providing the best Christian Education possible to our students and that their faith is of utmost importance to them. It's what sets us apart from other forms of education. It is what we will continue to do as the Lord leads us into the future.
