In the fall of 1986, the Lord put it on the heart of a number of parents to start a Christian school in the City of Airdrie. These parents began to meet faithfully to pray about it. Throughout the fall and winter planning progressed, and two public meetings were held to determine whether there was enough interest from other families to actually make a go of it. After the first meeting, only 17 students could be counted on. After the second, only 23 were committed. It seemed a bit hopeless, but finally a decision was made to start the school regardless of the enrolment, and that seemed to generate faith among all.

Airdrie Koinonia Christian School opened its doors in September of 1987 with 54 students from kindergarten to grade seven. Originally, the school was housed in the basement of Fellowship Bible Chapel, the Pentecostal Church at the edge of town. The school has grown slowly and steadily since that time with only a few minor dips along the way.

As more students came, grades were added and new classrooms were needed. At one point the kindergarten was housed in another church across town. Eventually, two portable classrooms were set up to accommodate the increasing numbers. After eight years the school had begun to "take over” the space in the church, and was asked to seek alternate accommodations.

In 1995 plans were made to relocate 5 miles to the east of Airdrie on donated farm land, but in February the rezoning application was refused. Everyone was devastated as there was no Plan B (so far as we knew!), but the Lord clearly had other plans in mind. Within a few weeks a Plan B was taking shape, and that was to move the school 250 yards east to the Baptist Church next door. By May final approval had been received, and ground was broken July 5th. All through that summer, parents labored to get the new school ready. After a week's delay in the fall, the school opened with nine freshly painted portables and a record increase in enrolment to 165. There was much rejoicing!

Since then Airdrie KCS has expanded to include grade twelve and now has an enrolment of 270 students. Two new buildings have been added, one of which includes a well-equipped computer lab. From the beginning, no one would have imagined the shape that the school has taken, but with hindsight, the Lord's hand has been evident all along.

Expansion at our present sight is now at an end, and the school hopes to obtain a permanent site so that a permanent facility can be established. In the meantime, we continue to rejoice in God's goodness to the school: dedicated parents and faculty have combined to provide the spiritual and academic excellence for which the Koinonia Schools are known.
